Yes, if you’ve already got a Windows server such as Windows 2003 Small Business Server, you most probably can utilize the server as your phone system. This itself saves you buying proprietary hardware for your phone system. 3CX runs as a software service on the machine and uses very little resource up to 16 concurrent calls (by internal testing). If you have more than 16 calls at the same time, you’re best to get a dedicated machine for the phone system.
3CX also runs on windows xp machines. For small businesses, you might be able to run your phone system on a spare PC that you have currently and then upgrade to a better machine when you’re able to. It’s a great way to save cost at the start. You need the Windows XP machine up and running all the time so it’s best not to run it on your current PC.
